THE OSCAR RACE-WHAT DO THE 'BOOKIES' SAY?

Ladbrokes, the British bookmaker, has given 10-to-11 odds that Martin Scorsese'sThe Departed’ will win the Oscar for best picture this year. ‘Babel’ is close behind with 9-4 odds. ‘Little Miss Sunshine’ follows at 4-1. Dark horses are ‘The Queen’ with 8-1 odds and ‘Letters from Iwo Jima’ at 12-1. In the acting category, the bookmaker has already stopped taking bets on Helen Mirren in the best actress category, who is regarded as a shoo-in. While betting is perfectly legal on such events as the Oscar outcomes in the United Kingdom, Las Vegas Nevada state law prohibits betting on any event whose winners are known.

SUNDANCE FILM FEST UNEARTHS 'SON OF RAMBOW' AS FUTURE HIT FILM!

Largely because of this year's Sundance Film Festival, Garth Jennings, one half of of production company Hammer & Tongs, still has a huge smile on his face over the long, heated bidding war that broke out over his latest movie, ‘Son Of Rambow’. When all was said and done, Paramount Vantage had won, but it cost them  eight million dollars!  Everyone is remembering that last year, one of the most expensive purchases was ‘Little Miss Sunshine’, which can’t seem to stop winning film awards and now has four major Oscar nominations, including best picture. ‘Son Of Rambow’ was written and directed by Garth, whose last film was the popular ‘Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy’. His new story deals with two young boys growing up in Britain of the 1980s, each growing up on opposite sides of the tracks , with  one from a poor family, the other from a wealthy household. Together they discover a mutual liking for ‘First Blood’, the initial of Sylvester Stallone'sRambo’ movies. The boys, together decide to make their own version of the film so that they can enter it onto s popular local TV quiz show.  The Sundance positive buzz is out, and given what happened to ‘Sunshine’ last year, this Film Fest  sale is the best international free publicity the movie could ever expect before distribution. SCREEN ACTORS GUILD  AWARDS ARE  LAST MAJOR EVENT BEFORE OSCAR

The Screen Actors Guild Awards, the only major film & television event where in only actors vote for actors, presented its 13th annual gala honoring outstanding performances for 2006 at a sold out Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center.  The 43rd Annual Life membership Award this year was given to Dick Van Dyke. But there were no surprises as Forest Whitaker, Helen Mirren, Jennifer Hudson and Eddie Murphy walked off with the top awards for theatrical films and Alec Baldwin, America Ferrara, Jeremy Irons, Hugh Laurie, Helen Mirren (again)  and Chandra Wilson garnered the television honors. The motion picture ensemble award went to ‘Little Miss Sunshine’ cast, while ‘The Office’ and ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ won the Comedy and Drama Ensemble Prizes respectively. For the entire listing:

Penelope Cruz w / Pedro Almodovar

PEDRO ALMODOVAR WINS, BUT SNUBS SPANISH GOYAS!

Here there were two big surprises. First, where’s Pedro? And second, this year's lack of audience boring political rhetoric.  Pedro Almodovar's "Volver" took home a record five top honors at the 21st Goya Awards ceremony , leaving rivals "Alatriste", "Pan's Labyrinth" and "Salvador" to divide up the remainder of the less popular prizes. The big buzz during the evening was the fact that even though "Volver" received several key awards, including film, director, actress, original score and supporting actress, Spain's most popular director was not on hand to receive his award. He decided to stay home because Pedro had a major argument with the Spanish film academy in 2005 over the treatment of his film "Bad Education" and hasn't attended a gala ceremony since. But that didn’t dampen "Volver" star Penelope Cruz’s spirits and she was everyone’s undisputed queen of the evening. Penelope is also nominated for an Oscar for the same role and her win for ‘Volver’ was her second Goya award. Later in the evening, she reappeared to accept Almodovar's directorial award for "Volver," his 16th feature. Guillermo del Toro, whose "Labyrinth" had been nominated for 13 awards, took home seven statues and will represent Mexico for the foreign-language Oscar. "Alatriste" had been nominated in 15 categories but didn't fare so well, managing only three prizes.  The political drama "Salvador," which had been nominated for 11 categories, won only one. The Spanish Film Academy, which hands out the prestigious awards, made a conscientious effort to glamorize the event and shorten it, and delayed the televised broadcast by 30 minutes to cut down the speeches. In the past few years the Gala, had been dominated by anti -American political interests and saw its ratings fall dramatically. This year the event was noticeably apolitical. Yet no American actor or film won any awards. “The Queen” won the best European Film award. For entire Goya awards listing:
