While in Rome, Italy to publicize his current
film, “Blood Diamond” Leonardo DiCaprio told a press conference that he
considered the Oscars nothing special and considered the 'Golden Statuette' just
another media driven award. Leo also
called for all guests attending the Oscar Gala to boycott the wearing of
diamonds that evening in protest to their being mined in African
countries which use the proceeds to further war efforts. According to our
informed sources, the diamond industry seems to be very worried by the bad
publicity Leonardo’s film is giving their business and has quietly advised
every Academy Award Gala guest that they would be paid $10,000.00 each if they
wore diamonds to the event. In response Leonardo is calling on guests to reject
the offer. Of note is the fact that not all diamonds are what are termed 'Conflict Diamonds’ in that they are not all necessarily extracted from those
countries that use them to finance their war efforts. But the problem is how do
you tell where a diamond comes from?In our estimation, the diamond industry
has not made that distinction clear.
